If a borrower is the spouse or parent of a deceased or totally and permanently disabled 9/11 victim, he or she may be eligible to have student loans incurred on behalf of the eligible victim discharged. This discharge is also extended to the spouses eligible public servants (police, fire, armed forces, other safety/rescue personnel) who died or became totally and permanently disabled in the terrorist attacks at either the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, or Flight 93.
Direct Loans, FFEL Program loans and Perkins Loans are eligible for this discharge, including consolidation loans made to pay off loan amounts owed on September 11, 2001.
